Geezers and Schuetzen Shooting
We call ourselves the Geezers and we shoot old rifles, at least that’s what most folks know about our group. There’s more to the story. From the late 1800’s until World War I, Schuetzen competitions were held all over the United States. The Chicago area had several active groups. Shoots were front page news in the papers and families made outings to watch the competition. Competitors shot single shot rifles in offhand matches for gold medals and silver trophies. Shooters got rock star treatment.
The Geezers are a group within the Wheaton Rifle Club who are dedicated to keeping the Schuetzen tradition alive. We have competitions on the first Sunday of the month from November through April. We also gather every Wednesday during that time for informal practice.
If you’re interested in single shot rifles such as Ballards, Winchester High and Low Walls, Remington Hepburns, Stevens and Martinis come and join us at a shoot or at a practice session. You’ll meet some good shooters who are also very knowledgeable about the old guns. We keep the pace slow and the competition friendly. Come out and see what it’s all about!
